Top 10 Trailers of the Year: Terrific Teases

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Making a terrific trailer is truly an art form, and Movie Fanatic salutes that effort while counting down the Top 10 Trailers of 2013. The other thing about a trailer is that sometimes a film can have an amazing trailer, and not even be a good movie!

Our Top 10 Trailers of 2013 features superheroes that are coming (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier), superheroes that already thrilled us (Man of Steel), a space adventure that had us gasping for air (Gravity) and proof that even a simple logo reveal can get hearts racing (Catching Fire).

10. The Hunger Games Catching Fire MTV Trailer
The Catching Fire first MTV trailer brilliantly captured what would become one of the best movies of the year. It played to the passion that fans of Suzanne Collins’ book series have for the franchise. And what better way to feed that fire than to also announce to the world that the highly anticipated movie has a logo that literally burns with the same passion fans have for the entire series -- shown in the teaser's final moments!

9. We’re the Millers Red Band Trailer
The We’re the Millers red band trailer may have scored so huge because it featured the phrase “Jennifer Aniston as a stripper.” But, it cannot be argued that the teaser also served its purpose in turning what many thought was a forgettable comedy release into one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.

The We’re the Millers red band trailer hinted at the comedic greatness that was the combination of Aniston, Jason Sudeikis, Emma Roberts and Will Poulter posing as a fake family to get drugs over the U.S. border from Mexico in an RV.

8. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
It has to be a challenge to come up with a story for each of the individual heroes that triumphed as a whole in The Avengers. Proof that Marvel is doing it right arrived in the form of the Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer.

The question of where the follow-up to Captain America: The First Avenger would go, whether back to the 1940s to tell another World War II tale or to continue his present day efforts as a member of the famed superhero conglomerate, was answered. With Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow at his side and new-to-the-series Anthony Mackie as the Falcon joining the fray, it looks like their battle against the Winter Soldier is going to be a victory for audiences.

7. Despicable Me 2 Guess Who’s Back Trailer
We knew Gru was coming back in the sequel to Despicable Me, but what got us the most with the Despicable Me 2 Guess Who’s Back trailer was the presence of the Minions! Not more really needs to be said! It worked as Despicable Me 2 went on to be the top grossing animated and comedy movie of the year.

6. Fast and Furious 6
The question of what the sixth installment of Fast and Furious would look like was answered firmly with the first Fast and Furious 6 trailer. Taking the gang to the streets of London in an effort to secure full pardons for all their crimes… well, that was a genius idea for a plot. And given the action sequences teased in this first trailer, audiences were ready to get behind the wheel months before the film would open.

5. Man of Steel Trailer Three
The previous Man of Steel teases did not do much to instill a vote of confidence in fans of Superman. But, when the third Man of Steel trailer landed with its Hans Zimmer-composed score literally uplifting the drama and action, we were immediately sold on Zack Snyder’s vision for a new and improved Man of Steel.

4. The Wolf of Wall Street
Martin Scorsese may be in his 70s, but judging by the first The Wolf of Wall Street trailer, he thinks like a hipster more than half his age. The powerful Kanye West song played perfectly with the images of greed and debauchery that is central to the true life story of Wall Street tycoon Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his several year run of ripping off investors and becoming filthy rich in the process.

3. Gravity: Detached Trailer
Movie fans, and especially sci-fi fans, were intrigued by the concept of Alfonso Cuaron’s space epic Gravity from early trailers. But, the Gravity: Detached trailer got the jaw-dropping, can’t catch your breath reaction from viewers that Warner Bros. knew they would have for the entire film as a whole!

2. X-Men: Days of Future Past
The X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer arrived much earlier than we expected and it could not have been a bigger treat. How director Bryan Singer was going to combine his X-Men worlds of old and new was answered in that two-minute-plus span, and in the process, anticipation for one of 2014’s most eagerly anticipated movies shot through the roof. And that scene where Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and James McAvoy’s Professor X come face to face… momentous!

1. The Conjuring Teaser Trailer
The Conjuring teaser trailer was just a teaser, but it scores as the best of the year. It was hands down the most frightening trailer of 2013, and it could largely be credited with making the James Wan horror fest the blockbuster it became. The scene with Lili Taylor looking in a dark room with nothing but a lit match can be traced to why this clip scores so high on our countdown. It is terror personified.
