When we posted the announcement of the Thor: The Dark World DVD and Blu-Ray upcoming release, Movie Fanatic mentioned that there would be a new Marvel One Shot entitled All Hail the King. We had heard rumors that the latest Marvel short film would focus on Ben Kingsley’s character from Iron Man 3 and that the Mandarin would be given more time to shine. But, given the moniker of the latest Marvel One Shot, we assumed that things had changed and it would focus on Loki! Honestly, we couldn’t be happier we were wrong.
Entertainment Weekly has published a few photos from the upcoming All Hail the King One Shot that is included in the Thor: The Dark World home video release and it is the man himself, Mandarin, in prison.
The story of the latest Marvel One Shot follows the Mandarin (or you can call him by his thespian name, Trevor Slattery) as he is locked up, and he is conducting his first interview since his incarceration. Audiences, reportedly, will see Slattery receiving the acting fame that he so desired, albeit it came along in a much different manner than he expected -- what with the whole being the face of an international terrorist part!
Scoot McNairy (Argo) plays a doc filmmaker who is chronicling the aftermath of the entire Mandarin episode in our (fictional) history. Screenwriter Drew Pearce (who co-wrote Iron Man 3) penned the short film and let the world know what to expect, including that it will be revealed that Slattery starred in a failed 1980s pilot that was like Magnum P.I. “mixed with the Cold War!”
“Imagine a real terrorist organization whose beliefs were long held and religious for thousands of years, and imagine a drunk, British actor coming along and essentially telling the world that he’s the face of your organization,” Pearce said in EW. “I think they would be right to be quite angry.”
Shouldn’t that mean that Slattery, er Mandarin, should be a little nervous that there will be repercussions? “By the end of the short, there are definitely a lot of exciting other places that are brought up in it that could then go in the Marvel universe.”
