James Cameron has said that he is making three Avatar sequels instead of just one. Clearly a huge part of that would be the characters played in Avatar by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. Well, Cameron and 20th Century Fox have announced today that Worthington and Saldana are all sorts of signed, sealed and delivered for all three sequels, with filming of the first set to begin later in 2014.
Cameron definitely needed these players to make his Avatar four-movie series work. And the creator behind the world of Avatar is beyond thrilled. “Jake Sully is a rare combination of passion, strength, street smarts and soul, which requires a lot from an actor,” he said in a statement. “Sam brought to the role a combination of sensitivity, vulnerability and strength.”
As for Saldana, her success since the Avatar movie in films such as Colombiana and the Star Trek movies shows that she can pull her weight, no matter the genre. “Zoe captured every aspect of the character I envisioned, bringing to Neytiri a mix of delicacy, fierceness and incredible physicality,” Cameron admitted. “I am beyond pleased they will be returning to Pandora.”
Look for the first Avatar sequel in December 2016, with the following two each landing exactly a year later.
