The success of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs may have been a surprise, but given the popularity of the children’s book on which it’s based, in hindsight it should not have been a shock. So of course we got a Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and it is as good, if not better in many ways, as the original.
The animated sequel is out now on DVD and Blu-Ray, and after we got a preview of the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 DVD bonus features, we dove into the entire package.
As teased in the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 trailer, after the events of the first movie, Swallow Falls is a complete and utter mess. The residents are, courtesy of a Steve Jobs-type character named Chester V, evacuated and our scientist/inventor hero -- Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) -- is given his dream job alongside his idol, Chester V!
Then, after Chester’s company is having issues with cleaning up the island, he hires Lockwood to go back home to do his best as his invention from the first film that sent food falling from the sky is having an unexpected side effect. Those food items have morphed into foodimals and now they’re wreaking havoc on the tiny hamlet. Instead of going alone, as he was instructed, Flint brings his friends -- including girlfriend Sam (Anna Faris). What they find is an island overrun by frightening food-animal hybrids, such as the Tacodile. This adventure is clearly unlike any other.
Our theatrical Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 review found it a wickedly clever movie that will please adults and children alike with its smart sense of humor and puns that come at the audience like they’re coming out of a comedic machine gun.
When it comes to the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 DVD and Blu-Ray, the bonus features are aplenty and they are equally as entertaining as they are insightful.
The four mini-movies absolutely have to be the highlight. They all exist in the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs universe, and expand on it. For fans of the franchise, this quartet of shorts is an absolute gift. It’s hard to choose which is our favorite: Attack of the 50-Foot Gummi Bear, Steve’s First Bath, Super Manny or Earl Scouts! But, given our affinity for the character of Steve (Neil Patrick Harris), we have to go with the mayhem that ensues from his first experience at bathing.
Directors Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn have been with the series since the beginning and their insight as animators, story board artists and now directors of the sequel is priceless on the audio commentary track.
When it comes to bonus featurettes, there are seven -- yeah, seven! We highlight two that truly stand out.
Given the wildly creative world they’ve created in the sequel, viewers have to check out Anatomy of a Foodimal which gives insight into how filmmakers created those Flamangos, Cheesespiders and Hippotatomuses.
The film’s end credits did not simply go with the usual rolling of all those creative types who got together to make a masterful movie, and Sony Pictures Animation created a wildly fresh end credits scene. On Awesome End Credits, viewers get to dive in with the filmmakers as they craft a series of 3D, 2D, stop motion and live action sequences for the end of the film.
