Third Person Exclusive: Paul Haggis on Characters Who "Take Me Someplace I Don't Want To Go"

Third Person writer-director Paul Haggis is no stranger to the complexities of weaving multiple storylines into a congruent dramatic narrative that produces greatness. He won two Oscars for Crash, one for his screenplay and the other that saluted his direction with the award for Best Picture.

We caught up with Haggis for an exclusive video interview to talk about his latest writing-directing effort, Third Person, starring Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, James Franco, Adrien Brody and Mila Kunis.

As teased in the Third Person trailer, the story chronicles three very different love stories across three cities in the world. It’s classic Haggis with its interweaving stories that all add up to one big dramatic punch. Amongst our questions for the esteemed auteur, we wondered where the biggest challenge lies in creating such complex stories -- in writing, filming, editing… or where?

“Writing it, and getting it right and trusting the characters to allow me to take me someplace that I didn’t want to go,” Haggis said.

Given that this is the man who wrote Million Dollar Baby, Casino Royale and In the Valley of Elah, we can see exactly where he’s coming from!
