The wait is over, Transformers fans. Transformers: Age of Extinction hits theaters with a new star (Mark Wahlberg) and high expectations. But, it is not alone in the new-to-the-theaters department this weekend.
Joining that monster of a movie are two smaller flicks. Chris Evans stars as a hero of a different kind in Snowpiercer, and Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler make fun of rom-coms in They Came Together.
Let's break it down:
Transformers Age of Extinction: The latest Michael Bay explosive blockbuster takes place years after the Battle of Chicago in the last flick. And certain people (led by Kelsey Grammer) are trying to rid the world of all the Transformers. When Walhberg stumbles on Optimus Prime, he sets off a series of events that lead to a climactic conclusion in Hong Kong. For more, check out our Transformers: Age of Extinction review. For fans of the series, they'll love it. For all others, well...
Snowpiercer: Evans is back in the hero role in this thriller, but it could not be more different than his work in Captain America. A new ice age has taken over the planet and the roughly 1,000 survivors that are left are on a train that is circling the globe. A strict class system is in place, enforced with an iron hand by Tilda Swinton. The film is a surprise thriller with lots of societal messages, as we stated in our Snowpiercer review.
They Came Together: Poehler and Rudd are the perfect team to lampoon the rom-com, and if there is a genre that is ripe for the Scary Movie treatment, it is the romantic comedy. As reported in our They Came Together review, it's not the most incredible movie of all time, but you will laugh out loud many, many times as they make fun of everything from When Harry Met Sally to You've Got Mail.
