Audiences Go Bananas for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Weekend Box Office Report

The apes of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes are taking over the world in more ways than one. The film opened at $73 million to win the weekend box office and showed that those “damn dirty apes” not only are ruling the world, but they are taking control of the nation’s movie houses as well.

Guess those good reviews (check out our Dawn of the Planet of the Apes review) and a CinemaScore of A- didn't hurt things. Just for reference, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opened 33 percent higher per screen than the previous film.

Meanwhile, Transformers: Age of Extinction finished second with $16.5 million and that was enough to send it over the $200 million mark. In three weeks of release, the fourth Michael Bay Transformers movie has earned $209 million.

Third place belongs to Tammy, the Melissa McCarthy-Ben Falcone comedy -- which added another $12.9 million to bring its two-week total to an impressive $57.4 million. That’s some serious cash for a non-sequel comedy.

Fourth found 22 Jump Street with $6.7 million -- another comedy that is more than finding its audience. In five weeks, the Jonah Hill-Channing Tatum laugh and action fest has earned $172 million.

Closing out the top five is How to Train Your Dragon 2. It opened the same weekend as 22 Jump Street and its $5.9 million take this weekend brings its cume to $152 million.
