Faith-based movies have been doing quite well of late at the box office and that could easily explain the success of Heaven Is For Real.
The true story of the Burpo family and their experiences when there four-year-old son had a brush with death and came back insisting he had visited heaven firmly knows its audience. That viewership should greatly expand as Heaven Is For Real is out now on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.
As teased in the Heaven Is For Real trailer, Greg Kinnear plays the Burpo patriarch, who is a minister in their small town and is the perfect person to anchor a film about questioning and exploring one’s faith. Kelly Reilly plays his wife and collectively they have quite different and compelling reactions to their son’s announcement and everything that it means.
Our theatrical Heaven Is For Real review found the story a little light for such a heady subject, but one thing is for sure, families will cherish a movie that they can watch together and have a nice discussion after.
The cast beyond the two leads is fantastic, led by Thomas Haden Church and Margo Martindale -- who we’d watch in anything.
Directed by Braveheart writer Randall Wallace (who also directed Secretariat and The Man in the Iron Mask) helms it with an even hand, but for a film that carries a weighty issue, we just wanted a little more weight to the drama.
The Heaven Is For Real DVD and Blu-Ray contain deleted scenes that we could take or leave.
The Making Of Heaven Is For Real bonus featurette is especially fascinating for us as we are fans of Wallace as it is good to see how the auteur works. And what also compels is how the director and his team got together for how they would shoot the scenes in “heaven.” It was a great big discussion and it’s truly a study in filmmaking to see how they made it come to life.
Speaking of that aspect, the Colton Goes to Heaven featurette is also a treat as it gives viewers an inside look into how that somewhat small scene in the movie permeates throughout the entire story.
