When we caught up with Dane Cook for Planes, he had high hopes that people would identify with the story of his Dusty, a crop duster with dreams of something bigger. Audiences turned out in droves and the film became a blockbuster.
Now, Cook and Dusty are back in Planes: Fire and Rescue, and we asked him in our exclusive video interview what he thought it was about the story of Dusty that so resonated with people. “That message of what can I do beyond my own belief system,” he said. “That’s where we wanted to go with Dusty is how can he find his true voice.”
In the sequel, teased in the Planes: Fire and Rescue trailer, Dusty selflessly enlists to train to be a firefighting aircraft to help his home airport and to save lives in the process. That aspect, paying tribute to the real life people who run into danger when people are running away, is a special moment in the career of this stand-up comedian turned movie star.
“We want to put a spotlight on what these brave men and women do day-in and day-out,” Cook admitted.
Watch Planes online and see how Dusty first took flight and then check out Planes: Fire and Rescue in theaters July 18.
