You can forgive the Movie Fanatic weekend movie preview this week if we've gone a little bananas for the latest Apes movie, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
The highly anticipated sequel is not alone in the awesome new movie department this weekend as Richard Linklater's stunning Boyhood also premieres.
Let's break it down...
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Andy Serkis is back as Caesar, and as we stated in our Dawn of the Planet of the Apes review, the man deserves a lead acting nomination for an Oscar! What he does in a motion capture suit is stunning and that is also because of the script painted by a trio of writers.
The tale picks up 10 years after Rise of the Planet of the Apes as humans are struggling for survival. Meanwhile, apes have built themselves quite a life, and as a small group of humans encounters those apes, they appear to be on one last collision course to determine who will rule the planet. The film is powerful, emotionally compelling and action-packed. And if it doesn't finish the summer as the highest grossing movie of the season, we will be disappointed.
Boyhood: Linklater filmed Boyhood over 12 years, following one young actor from age 6 to 18. The adult stars, Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, play his parents and this is about as close to a "real family" movie as we've ever seen.
It is a stunning achievement in patience, as we report in our Boyhood review. To be able to film a few weeks a year for over a decade and produce a film that is so seamless, moving and monumental is a true testament to the talent of Linklater.
