The Expendables 3: Wesley Snipes & Kelsey Grammer Get “Cuckoo” With Sly

For The Expendables 3 stars Wesley Snipes and Kelsey Grammer, the chance to join the blockbuster franchise was super sweet, for vastly different reasons. “Well, it was a great opportunity to work with some of the actors I’ve always admired,” Snipes told Movie Fanatic.

“To get up close to them and see what they are like off screen versus what you see them like on screen in the characters that they portray was awesome -- also the chance to act a little crazy in this.”

You don’t get the full idea of how deliciously wacky Snipes’ Doc is from The Expendables 3 trailer, but having seen the film, trust us, he’s a nut in the best possible way. “My character Doc is a medic but he’s been away for about eight years. He was quite lonely and he had to spend a lot of time talking to himself and telling his own storylines to himself,” Snipes said.

“So he comes out cuckoo!”

For Grammer, it was a chance to be in an ensemble of action heroes in The Expendables 3 that was the true joy. See, he’s not exactly known for his action movie work over the years -- although he is also in Transformers: Age of Extinction this summer!

“I know that it spurs a kind of surprise that Kelsey Grammer would be on this ride, but I’m tougher than a lot of people think,” Grammer said and laughed.

“If you know anything about my personal life you’ll realize that. I think he was exploring an interesting part of the story to tell.”

Grammer works closely with The Expendables founder, Sylvester Stallone, in the film and their scenes are some of the best in the entire movie. Clearly, Grammer cherished those moments too. “[My character, Bonaparte] had a nice relationship. I love working with Sly. It was a presumptive joy to do that,” Grammer said.

“We fleshed out Bonaparte to a point where I hope he comes back and he comes back and maybe he can kick some ass next time, because I’m ready to! I’m working at the gym. I’m lunging at people in the streets. All those punch videos you’ve been seeing -- that’s me!”

It seems that Grammer had long pined to be in a Stallone movie, but “never knew if it would happen.”

They’d see each other at parties, but movie-wise, nothing seemed to be happening. So, Grammer got proactive and asked a mutual friend, director John Herzfeld, to get him in touch with Stallone.

“I called John and said, ‘Can you get in touch with Sly that I’d like to be in that next Expendables?’ Something worked out. My agent became a bit of a pest,” Grammer said and laughed

“I had the best time with Sly. It was a revelation to me on how smart and how improvisational Sly is as well, and generous with his time, and generous with his acting. What happened was I discovered this real sense of fondness for the man. I was thrilled to be in this film with all these extraordinary actors, but mostly I was so happy to work with Sly and find out how fantastic he really is. And I’ve been impressed ever since. And I hope we do something else together.”
