In what proved to be an extremely slow weekend – only one new movie opened wide, The Pyramid -- Mockingjay Part 1 took the box office title for the third week in a row.
How low were the earnings this weekend?
It was the lowest box office weekend of the year. But, with dozens of movies holding out for the last few weeks of the year, Hollywood need not worry. There is still plenty of bank yet to earn. Just look at our must-see December movies and there’s bound to be a handful each and every one of you are dying to see.
Mockingjay Part 1 added another $21.6 million to bring its total to $257.7 million. That’s a whole lot of revolution!
Second place belonged to those adorable and adventuresome penguins, as Penguins of Madagascar was the top family film for the second week running. Its second week haul was $11.1 million for a two-week cume of $49.6 million.
Horrible Bosses 2 landed in third place and its $8.6 million should help it at least reach $50 million before it’s done. It currently sits at $36 million.
In fourth was one of our favorites of the year, Big Hero 6. In three weeks in the theaters, the Disney film has made $177.5 million ($8.1 million of that came this weekend).
Closing out the top five is the Christopher Nolan space epic, Interstellar. Its $8 million took its total in four weeks to $158.7 million.
