The first trailer for the highly anticipated NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton, has landed and if we were beyond exited for this film before, now we’re downright ecstatic.
The red band trailer has dropped and it features an intro of Ice Cube and Dr. Dre driving the streets of Compton where they grew up, met, and formed the most dangerous band in the world. They would also change the landscape of music and culture forever.
This is an incredibly important story to tell, and not just from a music angle. Hip hop is the largest selling music genre in the world, but it was not always that way.
There was a struggle going on in the streets of south central Los Angeles in 1987, that was also felt in other cities across America. Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E would come together and put emotional lyrical power to music that represented how an entire culture felt.
The response was not always pleasant. And even in the (all too short for us!) trailer debut, you get the feeling that these guys were about to change the world at the most and at the least would shine a spotlight on a blight that had been too long ignored.
The film is directed by F. Gary Gray and produced by original NWA members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, along with Mat Alvarez, Tomica Woods-Wright and Will Packer.
Straight Outta Compton also features O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Ice Cube (Cube’s real-life son!), Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre and Jason Mitchell tackles Eazy-E. And don’t miss Paul Giamatti as the group’s visionary manager.
