The DUFF is based on the book by Kody Keplinger, and features Mae Whitman and Robbie Amell as neighbors who explore the nature of the titular acronym. Yup, it means Designated Ugly Fat Friend. When Whitman's lead discovers that is what she is called, everything changes.
The teen comedy is much more than a genre film, it speaks to anyone who feels that they do not fit in.
We caught up with Whitman and Amell’s co-stars, Bella Thorne, Skyler Samuels and Bianca A. Santos, for an exclusive video interview where Thorne admitted that she was blown away by the film’s resonance, but also its humor.
“I read the script and I thought I would die from laughter,” Thorne told us. “I’ve never read a teen comedy that was so on the nose.”
As you can tell from The DUFF trailer, this is no ordinary comedy geared at high school kids. It resonates because it preaches accepting oneself for who you are and that message is absolutely universal. Check out what else the film's stars said in our video interview above!
Look for The DUFF in theaters February 20.
