Avengers Age of Ultron: Joss Whedon on James Spader's Motion Capture “Nightmare”

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Joss Whedon clearly thinks that James Spader is one good sport. In a new video, released by Marvel, Whedon is talking specifically about the challenge that the Avengers: Age of Ultron director had to put his actor through to capture the titular villain.

Spader has done many things in his life, but appearing in a motion capture suit while pretending to be an eight-foot-tall robot was not one of them.

Whedon talks about, in the below video, how Spader arrived on the set and the very next day was put into the most uncomfortable contraption that forced him to perform all his lines and movements without his glasses.

“It was a nightmare for poor James,” Whedon said.

But, Whedon was absolutely amazed at the actor’s gifts… even in the face of such challenges. “He’d go from very intense to very comedic and get there (snapped his fingers).”
