Heading into this release day for Avengers: Age of Ultron, one could already predict that it was going to be one of the top grossing movies of the year, if not the top blockbuster of the year. Judging by its Thursday preview numbers, it will do even better than the first The Avengers.
Marvel and Disney are reporting that Avengers: Age of Ultron has already banked $27.6 million from its Thursday night previews -- that’s almost $9 million more than Joss Whedon’s The Avengers made during the exact same weekend in 2012. It also set a record for Thursday night IMAX showings, banking $3 million (the previous record was set by The Dark Knight Rises with $2.3 million).
Although those numbers are fantastic and should send Avengers: Age of Ultron off on a $200 million-plus weekend, these are not record-setting numbers. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 took in $43.5 million with its Thursday previews in 2011.
