Born in New York City, Carlin dropped out of high school at 14 and joined the Air Force.Â After being discharged in 1957, Carlin worked at radio stations with comedy team partner Jack Burns.
In the 1960s, Carlin was doing stand-up comedy and appeared on television shows including The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
In the 1970s, Carlin delivered his infamous "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" bit and was arrested for obscenity in 1972.Â He also was the first host of Saturday Night Live in 1975.Â He also began doing specials for HBO during the 1970s.
It was finally in 1989 that Carlin became famous with a whole new generation, with his first major film role in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.Â In 1995, Carlin had his own sitcom show, The George Carlin Show which lasted for 27 episodes.Â Carlin then return to film and worked with Kevin Smith three times in Dogma, Jersey Girl, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
George Carlin's best work, though, had always been his stand-up comedy and he's had 14 HBO specials and was voted the second greatest stand-up comic by Comedy Central.
Carlin has also written five books, including Brain Droppings and When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?
