Sayuri Nitta: [turns to see the Chairman standing in front of her] Chairman, where is Nobu-san?
Chairman: He won't be coming.
Sayuri Nitta: Is something wrong?
Chairman: He knows what happened. It is not in his nature to forgive.
Sayuri Nitta: Chairman, what happened on the island...
Chairman: Please, you don't have to explain.
Sayuri Nitta: But I have shamed myself so deeply, past all forgiveness.
Chairman: No! I'm the one who must be forgiven.
Sayuri Nitta: I do not understand.
Chairman: Perhaps... if you had only known the truth.
Sayuri Nitta: The truth?
Chairman: Some years ago, I was on my way to the theater. I saw a little girl weeping by the Sunagawa. I stopped to buy her a cup of sweet ice.
Sayuri Nitta: You knew I was that little girl?
Chairman: Didn't you ever wonder why Mameha took you under her wing?
Sayuri Nitta: Mameha came to me because of you?... I wish you could have told me long ago.
[turns her back to him]
Chairman: What could I do? I owe Nobu my life. And so when I saw that he had a chance at happiness with you, I stood silent, but... But I cannot any longer. I hope... it is not too late. Don't be afraid to look at me, Chiyo.
Sayuri Nitta: [turns around to face him again] Can't you see? Every step I have taken, since I was that child on the bridge, has been to bring myself closer to you.
[finally kiss and embrace, cries in his arms]

Please, Sayuri, do not be afraid to look at me.

[to his wife] You... kept me... alive.

We're not leaving. We're the Marines. You are our mission.

We prepared for everything. Not for this. Not for something this size. There's no plan.

Mother in Hospital: My son ... works the elevator in the south tower... he's a good boy. Then I saw that building going down like a pancake... damn thing is I yelled at him. I made dinner and he got held up at work... food went to waste. Now all I wanna do is hold him.
Donna McLoughlin: I know... I know.

It's as though God put up a screen of smoke to prevent us from seeing something we are not yet ready to see.

Dave Karnes

[narrating] "9/11 showed us what human beings are capable of. The evil, yeah, sure. But it also brought out the goodness we forgot could exist. People taking care of each other for no other reason than it was the right thing to do. It's important for us to talk about that good, to remember. 'Cause I saw all of it that day."

Will Jimeno: This guy. He's gonna die if you don't get him out soon. And the only thing in the way is my leg. I want you to cut it off. Just cut if off. I can live without a leg.
Scott Strauss: I'm not cutting your leg off. I can't. You're coming out in one piece, you hear me?
Will Jimeno: You gotta... Look it's my leg. Just juice me up and cut it off. If he dies, I die. That's just the way it is.
Scott Strauss: Look Will, your partner must be 20 feet deeper. Probably more compacted than you. Even if I cut your leg off, he's not gonna get out of there for hours. I'm sorry, man. Now, let me do my work.

Scott Strauss: Chuck. Paddy. Just get out of here. This whole damn thing could come down on us. There's no sense in all of us getting killed.
Chuck Sereika: You gonna pry up that slab and get him out of here yourself? I've been in and out of rehab for years. Finally figured out the only thing I've been ever good at is helping people. We're doing this together.
Paddy McGee: I Ain't leaving.
Will Jimeno: I don't mean to break up the moment, but were all getting out of here together.

It is impossible to save people that are THAT high up!
