Many superhero movies get the casting so right, it's frankly scary. It's like the person was born to be that role -- like Heath Ledger as The Joker or Christopher Reeve as Superman.
But, oftentimes the casting department gets it all sorts of wrong and it can even derail the entire movie. Daredevil, anyone?

Dane DeHaan in The Amazing Spider-Man 2
We love Dane DeHaan and think he is one of the most talented actors of his generation. Before this kid is done, we think the title “multiple Oscar winner” will be attached to his name. Unfortunately, in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, his Harry Osborn was too many things -- crazy, jaded, jealous and so much more that just wasn’t right. And once he became the Green Goblin, he just went psycho and completely over the top.
Ben Affleck in Daredevil
One of the most iconic disasters in superhero movie history was the institution that is Daredevil, and it started with the casting of Ben Affleck. It’s amazing and speaks to how far Affleck has come as an actor that we’re actually excited to see him as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel. But as Daredevil, he was a disaster.
Jessica Alba in Fantastic Four
Jessica Alba was The Invisible Woman in so many ways in the Fantastic Four movies. Like, she might as well have been invisible! Although many think she is a pretty face, we’ve never been convinced of her acting abilities. That was never as present as it was in the two Fantastic Four movies. Hopefully that role gets improved in Josh Trank’s new Fantastic Four.
James Franco in Spider-Man
With James Franco in Spider-Man, we have a case of another Harry Osborn in a Spider-Man movie and another misfire in the casting department. Franco was probably hired for his good looks and we know the man has talent. But his turn in the three Spider-Man movies was oh-so flat and faulty.
Arnold Schwarzenegger in Batman and Robin
Mr. Freeze was ice cold in so many ways with the performance that Arnold Schwarzenegger gave in Batman and Robin. He had way too many quips, delivered absolutely terribly by the superstar. In a movie that was a mess, he might have been the messiest.
Liev Schreiber in X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Flat, flat, flat… here’s another actor we just treasure, but Liev Schreiber was so miscast as Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we’re not sure even he knew what to do with the role.
