Interstellar arrives from Christopher Nolan quite soon and the most anticipated movie of the fall is clearly inspired by a wide variety of movies that came before.
Before you head to the theaters and witness Nolan's latest -- starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain -- might we suggest you watch these nine films that clearly influenced the filmmaker.

2001: A Space Odyssey
From the ships in Interstellar to the messages about no matter how far out into space we go, we must never stop forgetting what makes us human, it all adds up to one huge influence on Christopher Nolan. And that score... that's another point of influence.
The Right Stuff
What's fascinating about Interstellar is how it views the space program. No giveaways here, but the ramp-up to Matthew McConaughey and his crew heading into space, well, that is obviously inspired by The Right Stuff and its profile of the Mercury "can do" attitude.
The Day After Tomorrow
The Day After Tomorrow may seem like an interesting choice, but what is it that sends McConaughey into space searching for a new home for humans? It's an unlivable planet! And even the title of the Jake Gyllenhaal-starring film tells it all, The Day After Tomorrow (may be too late).
Mud is on this list because this renaissance of Matthew McConaughey, for us, truly started with his turn in Mud. Without Mud, there is no Dallas Buyers Club, and without Dallas Buyers Club, there is no Interstellar.
The seeds of Interstellar for Christopher Nolan can truly be seen in Inception. The way he plays with time and space, that's all over Interstellar. And some have even described Interstellar as a Gravity meets Inception.
Speaking of Gravity, well, it's on this list for obvious reasons. Deep space movies are a challenge, and this one does it beyond right.
