Shirley MacLaine was born in Richmond, Virginia and made her acting debut at age 21 in Alfred Hitchcock's The Trouble with Harry in 1955 and won the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year.  She then starred in Some Came Running in 1958 and got her first Academy Award nomination.

MacLaine would get her second Academy Award nomination for her role in The Apartment which co-starred Jack Lemmon in 1960.  MacLaine's third Academy Award nomination would come in her role as the title character in the 1963 Imma la Douce, again alongside Jack Lemmon.

MacLaine got her fourth Academy Award nomination in The Turning Point alongside Anne Bancroft in 1977.  It wasn't until the 1983 Terms of Endearment that MacLaine would finally win her much-deserved Academy Award.

MacLaine has continued to have a successful career with three Golden Globe Awards and ten more nominations.  She has most recently appeared in In Her Shoes and Closing the Ring.
