First, lets's just get this out there...It's hard not to wonder if the timing of the release of Angelina Jolie Pitt's (Changeling, Unbroken) new film with husband Brad Pitt (Inglourious Basterds), By the Sea, had anything to do with darkening the bright day of Brad's former wife, Jennifer Aniston, who announced her surprise (and secret) wedding to long-time beau Justin Theroux.
Using her recently changed full name, Jolie Pitt wrote and directed and stars in this film about a couple in the 70s who visit France at a time when their marriage appears to be in crisis. Roland and Vanessa, we hope, have seen better days as a couple.
While they drink, cry, slap each other and stare longingly out the windows at other, seemingly happy couples clasping hands, a song plays above over the trailer, "It's the perfect way, to end a perfect day."
Following comes kicking, bathing and ominous shots of the cliff by the sea while Roland asks Vanessa if she wants to hurt him and taunts her to do so, and she taunts back that he knows the reason she hates him.
It's hard not to imagine at least one, if not both, of these sad, sad people going over that cliff by the sea before the end of the movie. One thing is certain, they're acting the hell out of their dying marriage, with as much sadness as they had gun-toting anger in Mr. and Mrs. Smith at the start of their relationship.
I'm not sure By the Sea will be as much fun, but it will be worth a look.
By the Sea hits theaters Nov. 13, 2015.
